Purchasing Information
Definition: Hypoglycemia----Low blood sugar
Causes: "Puppy Hypoglycemia" is seen in toy breed dogs less than 5 months of age.  These dogs have more brain mass per body weight compared to other breeds and therefore need more glucose for brain function.  Other causes include excessive exercise or stresses - such as a routine trip to the vet's, which occurs in the absence of a meal, can cause the blood sugar to drop to dangerously low levels, low environmental temperatures, infections, vaccinations, strenuous exercise, and inadequate nutrition increase the risk even further.
Signs: Weakness, tire or droopy, listlessness, Loss of appetite.  They are followed by loss of metal alertness, wobbliness, muscle twitching or shaking, seizures, and death.
Treatment: If the puppy is awake, give it Nutri-cal, or Karo syrup by mouth.  If the puppy is having a seizure at home,  the owner can try rubbing corn syrup on the gums while transporting to the Vet.
Prevention: Prevent Hypoglycemia from happening by allowing only twenty minutes of play at a time.  Followed by rest or sleep.  Do not allow the puppy to overtire.  Supervise closely with children to make sure puppy is getting enough rest.  Keep puppy warm, don't let it become chilled.  Feeding a quality dog food.  We use Pro Plan small breed dog food.  Keep dry food & water available at all times.  Mix the dry dog food with the soft can small breed puppy food---morning & late afternoon or early evening.  When puppy is older feed according to weight chart on the dog food bag (ask your vet).
If you decide to switch to another brand of dog food, do it gradually mixing in a little of the new dog food each day.
Treats are great for training your puppy --- make them very small so the puppy will still eat his food.
